Aim: To provide research and insight of the peoples view on Litter and support reigniting Keep Britain Tidy’s Litter Strategy. Also codesign and collaborating with the general public on action plans and solutions to the nation’s litter problem.
Summary: The Big Litter Inquiry took place in spring/summer 2013 and took the form of a Citizens Jury, in collaboration with Keep Britain Tidy and social research agency BritainThinks, experts in this form of deliberative research. The research was over 2 days, repeated in the North and South of England. The 1st day looked at initial feelings and understanding towards litter and then grew these through presentations and discussions. Following this the 2nd day included representatives from local and national government, businesses and community organisations to support the discussions and action planning. Following the workshops a representative poll across England was undertaken to compare, support the findings.

Outcome: Many of the insights and findings from The Big Litter Inquiry have since been integrated into Keep Britain Tidy’s strategy and campaigns, particularly the translation of the costs to clean up litter into locally relevant figures or issues. It also demonstrated a new collaboratory way to work with the general public in developing solutions and strategy as well as pulling together a wide range of stakeholders at the same time.
Role: While Design and Evidence manager at Keep Britain Tidy I was the lead project manager in both developing the research in collaboration with BritainThinks and in its execution and write up. Supporting integration of findings across the charity and presenting findings externally.
