In The Field – Design & User Research

With my background as a product design engineer and product and programme evaluation I have experience in a range of design tools and techniques for research, prototyping, and insight development. It’s all about the research!

“Get outside and talk to your users”

Tools & Techniques: Interviews, Discussion guides, Observational studies, Photography, Prototyping, Surveys, Guided workshop, So-design, System mapping, Diary studies, Data collation, Insight development

Some Examples

Durable Tents – Supporting Rob Maslin of We All Design in some on the ground (very muddy), ethnographic design research and interviews for a Durable Tent project exploring alternative circular business models. You can read more on this here and in this article “Reading Festival to Tackle Blight of Abandoned Tents with New Green Campaign

Deliberative Research / Citizen’s Juries

While at KBT & Waste Watch we undertook these 2 pieces of research – The Urbin Issue (with Suez UK) looking at increasing urban recycling rates and The Big Litter Inquiry, looking at the problem of litter on our streets.

Research and conceptual design for emergency equipment – particularly for helicopter escape. Including undertaking and experiencing the BOSIET course myself.

“With restricted working memory & cognitive function, how a user will interact with a product can change in an emergency situation”

Human Powered Design – Peddle Power Craft for action sports. This included surfing in the North Sea in November!
